Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NIV)
This is one of the most exclusive claims ever made. Jesus says there is only one way to the Father – Himself. Without personally knowing and accepting Him, He says, eternity in Heaven isn’t possible.
Can that really be true?
We’ve all heard the objections:
“What about the millions of people who lead good, honest lives? It doesn’t seem fair to send them to hell.” “I’ve done a few bad things, but I’m one of the better ones.” “Surely it’s only the really bad people who go to hell?”
Universalism – the idea that everyone eventually gets to heaven – is popular for a reason. It’s comforting. But it also makes one question unavoidable: is Jesus really the only way to God?
Claiming there’s only one God, one way, one truth isn’t fashionable right now. Tolerance is prized above almost everything else, and “what’s true for you” is treated as good enough. But feelings don’t settle facts. Jesus said He was the only way. Either that’s true, or it isn’t.
If it is true, then how we answer this question has serious, eternal consequences. It’s easy to let emotion drive the answer. It’s harder, and more important, to look at the evidence. Truth isn’t always comfortable, especially when it challenges something we’ve always believed. But it’s truth that sets us free:
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32 NIV)
All religions are the not same
Read Jesus’s words at the top of this page again. There’s no ambiguity. He claims to be the way, not a way. Either a belief system leads to Heaven, or it doesn’t. According to Jesus, He’s the only one that does.
That’s a mutually exclusive claim. Jesus can’t share the title with another god or another path.
This doesn’t mean other beliefs aren’t worth understanding. They are. But a belief system built on a false premise will eventually fail, no matter how sincerely people hold it, and no matter how many people hold it. Popular consensus has been wrong before, and it doesn’t make something true now.
The Bible faces plenty of accusations – contradictions, myths, and worse. Most collapse under basic study. Between the historical and archaeological record and the weight of fulfilled prophecy, the evidence for the God of the Bible, and the Gospel itself, is substantial. Can you prove the Bible?
Our greatest desire
Ask people what they want most, and most will start with things: a house, a car, the latest phone. But underneath that, we all want the same thing: to be loved and accepted. We’re wired for relationships.
Can another person satisfy that? Partly, for a while. A good relationship can feel like everything we’ve ever wanted. But it’s never permanent. We fail each other. We make mistakes. Even the best marriages end, because we all die.
Death isn’t an abstract fact. It’s sudden, personal, and devastating when it takes someone we love.
Here’s the truth: God built that longing into us because only He can fully answer it. We function properly when we’re connected to Him – nothing else completes the picture.
Life throws hardship at all of us. Decisions that change everything. Seasons we didn’t choose. God wants to walk through those with you, to guide you, and above all, to show you a love that never runs out and never fails.
Every true believer has this: a personal relationship with Jesus, sealed by God’s own Spirit living in them.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever– the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17 NIV)
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? (1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV)
That Spirit is there for you, always. Following Christ doesn’t mean an easy life, the Bible is honest that it won’t be. But it means never facing it alone. No other belief system offers this kind of relationship.
Jesus proved Himself
Anyone can claim to be a religious founder. Proof is different. If Jesus says He’s the only way, we should expect evidence, and there’s a lot of it.
He raised the dead. He calmed a storm with a word. He restored sight to a blind man. He walked on water.
These miracles back up His claims (see more here). His life also fulfilled roughly 300 Old Testament prophecies, many of them entirely outside His control – where and when He was born, for instance.
Above all: Jesus rose from the dead. Christianity stands or falls on this single fact. No other religious founder has ever done it. Every other famous tomb is famous because of who’s inside it. His is famous because it’s empty.
There’s also the testimony of the people who saw it happen. Most of them were persecuted for saying so. Many were killed for refusing to recant. Would you die for a lie? People don’t usually die for something they know isn’t true.
Put it all together, and there’s really one honest conclusion: Jesus backed up His claims. He proved who He said He was.
Those “small” sins
The world God made was originally perfect. Adam and Eve lived in it, a world nothing like the one we know now. Then they disobeyed. Some dismiss the creation account as myth, but the evidence for it deserves a fair hearing before it’s written off.
That disobedience broke the relationship between humanity and God. And we can’t fix it ourselves. Good works don’t undo sin, they were never designed to. God had to deal with it Himself; there was no other righteous option. So Jesus came and took the punishment we deserved. His blood is what makes us right with God:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)
Being right with God means being entirely without sin. Heaven can’t be perfect if imperfect people are let in. So God, because He’s just, has to deal with all of it, including the sins we brush off as small. The white lies. The things we tell ourselves don’t count. His standard is far higher than ours.
That’s the real problem: measured against God’s standard, none of us qualify. It was never just the “really bad people” who fall short – we all do. The only way in is through what Jesus already paid.
I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.” (John 8:24 NIV)
Jesus IS the ONLY way
Culture shifts. Opinions change with the decade. God doesn’t:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 NIV)
Most people agree the world is broken. Not many belief systems claim to actually fix it.
Every other major worldview is works-based – keep doing enough, and maybe it’s enough. Followers never really know if they’ve done sufficient good to qualify. Christianity is the only belief system that names the real problem – sin – and offers a complete solution for it.
know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. (Galatians 2:16 NIV)
Jesus is the only way because He’s the only one who paid the penalty for us.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NIV)
Sin is a disease every one of us carries. Jesus is the only cure. Not a cure, the only one. Here’s how to be saved.
We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. (1 John 5:9-14 NIV)
