Knowing how to be saved matters more than almost anything else. There are no formal steps to follow, what matters is what you believe in your heart.
Salvation isn’t found in religion or good works. It’s found in a Person: the Lord Jesus Christ.
Your sin separates you from God, and one day you will face Him in judgment. But if you confess that you’re a sinner deserving of Hell, and believe that Jesus Christ died to pay for your sins and rose again, you can be saved.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23 NIV)
Jesus said you need to be born again to enter the kingdom of God:
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3 NIV)
Being born again means becoming a new creation, something that happens the moment you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour:
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV)
You need to trust in what Christ already finished – His death on the cross in your place, and His bodily resurrection, which defeated death and made you acceptable in God’s sight. That’s it. That belief is what makes you born again and brings the Holy Spirit to live in you. From there, you can live in a restored relationship with your Creator.
How do you call on the Lord?
Simply, by talking to Him. Use whatever words feel right; He knows you intimately, so there’s no wrong way to say it. If it helps, something like this:
| Heavenly Father, I know you love me and want to save me. Jesus, You died to save me and promised to save me if I trust You. I do trust You. I believe that You sent Jesus, your Son, to pay for my sins through His blood on the cross. I believe that you raised Him from the dead. Today I turn away from all of my sins and I put my trust in Jesus Christ alone as my Lord and Saviour. Please forgive me, change my heart, and grant me Your gift of everlasting life. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen |
Always pray in Jesus’s name – He is the only way to the Father. A few more verses on salvation:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NIV)
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10 NIV)
For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:40 NIV)
What happens next
You’re now saved and born again. The next step is to turn from your sins and live for Christ.
Reading the Bible regularly is essential, it’s how you get to know Jesus and stay close to Him. If you’re not sure where to start, try one of the Gospels, Luke or John are good entry points, and Genesis is a natural place to begin in the Old Testament. If you don’t have a Bible, contact us and we’ll help.
Giving your life to Christ brings real spiritual change, even if you don’t feel it dramatically right away. Don’t let that concern you. What matters is this: the moment you made that commitment, heaven celebrated.
In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. (Luke 15:10 NIV)
