We believe there is clear evidence for the existence of God in the world we live in – there is abundant evidence of design everywhere. The fact that the world does not always function properly does not negate the existence of a designer at all (in just the same way that when a machine designed by humans breaks down, this doesn’t negate the existence of the designer!). The existence of mathematics is also exceptional evidence, as without the structure that mathematics provides science would not be possible.
Science relies on the assumption that we live in an ordered universe that is subject to precise and measurable mathematical laws. For instance, the laws of physics are based on mathematical equations. The fact that mathematics is so accurate at describing nature poses a puzzle for the atheist. If God exists, then the effectiveness of mathematics to help explain the world around us is something we should expect, but atheism can only reason that it’s just an inexplicable ‘coincidence’.
