Who is the god of this world?

The most common objection to the loving God of the Bible is the existence of evil and suffering in all its forms – in fact, this is often a major problem for Christians too. This is why it’s important to understand who is the ‘god’ of this world.

We believe this issue can largely be resolved when understanding who is presently controlling the world. Due to the rebellion of mankind, God withdrew from the world as He cannot be in the presence of evil due to His purity and justice. This does nothing to diminish God’s sovereignty – God can (and often does) reach into the world to intervene for His purposes and glory. He does this through an army of angels and through the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the reality is that believers will often have no idea how much protection and providence that God places around those who are His. However, this does not change the fact that world as a whole is currently under the authority of the evil one, the devil. The Bible makes this very clear:

And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. (1 John 5:19)

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (2 Corinthians 4:4)

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (John 12:31)

Jesus further confirms this when he was tempted of the devil:

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (Matthew 4:8-10)

When Jesus was offered the ‘kingdoms of the world’ by the devil, this would have been no temptation at all had the devil not actually had possession of these in the first place! In His response, Jesus did not question the devil’s ownership of the ‘kingdoms of the world’.

In his letter the Ephesians, Paul further reiterates that the world currently in fallen state is under the control of ‘princes of the power of the air’:

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. (Ephesians 2:1-3)

This leaves the Christian with a different understanding of the world – when people blame God for all the evil in the world, they are blaming the wrong person – it is down to the devil who presently controls the world. Let’s not blame God for something that is someones else’s fault!

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (1 Peter 5:8)

The devil is currently VERY active as he knows his time is short and he knows his defeat is sealed. This does not mean we should fear the devil – the battle has been won on our behalf by Jesus Christ. Jesus is coming back soon to restore this broken planet and to gather those who love Him and have been saved through Him. The ONLY reason God is delaying this is to patiently wait for sinners to turn to Him in repentance before it’s too late. God provided the perfect (and only) solution to the corruption of the world for those who are willing to accept and this window of opportunity will end at some point.

For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. (Romans 11:25)

There is clear evidence that God created this amazing planet and every creature within it, including us – just take a look around – it’s inconceivable that this world is a random accident! Despite this, the world has been ruined and polluted by sin and rebellion and does not work as it was designed to. Everything will be put right when Jesus restores it, but He is only coming back for those who love Him and are looking for the Coming King – what are you waiting for?!

So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. (Hebrews 9:28, emphasis added)
