What to make of The Shemitah warning by Jonathan Cahn?

Many will have heard of Jonathan Cahn who is a Messianic Jewish Rabbi and pastor who sees parallels between the attacks on the twin towers with attacks on ancient Israel. He is a very knowledgeable and reliable Bible teacher and we love the passion he displays when appealing to others to turn in repentance to the Lord – he is well worth listening to. In particular, he warns that passages such as Isaiah 9:10 provide a prophetic warning of imminent judgment on the United States.

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. (Isaiah 9:10)

Further to this, in the his book ‘The Mystery of the Shemitah’, Cahn describes a seven-year pattern of judgment which climaxes each time on Elul 29, which on the last two occasions (17th Sept 2011 and 29th Sept 2008) has led to undeniable instances of divine financial judgment with some peculiar details that hint of supernatural intervention.

We are currently nearing the end of the current Shemitah with the last day (Elul 29) falling on 13th Sept 2015 – so, given the pattern of the last two 7-year cycles, should we all be worried?! The answer is maybe – there do appear to be signs that another financial collapse could be brewing. We do not claim to be financial experts but it seems obvious to us that the economic system in its present form and condition is unsustainable and could be heading towards a catastrophic collapse. We further suspect that this could be the means for an individual to step into the chaos and assume control of this financial armageddon which may lead to conditions described in Revelation 13:16-17.

However, there are also significant problems with this from our point of view:

1. We see no clear Bible passages that specifically directly link the United States with the Shemitah (or the end times for that matter).
2. Surely, the Shemitah relates specifically to Israel? Now that the nation of Israel has been re-born, we would imagine the Shemitah cycle would directly apply to the nation for whom it was originally intended as opposed to the United States.
3. It is true that the United States needs to repent and turn to God and there are many passages in the Bible to this effect, but this is true of EVERY nation.

Having said all of this, we will be watching events with both interest and concern. In truth, we are a little unsure what to make of the Shemitah and how it applies to end times. However, it is very clear to us that end time scenarios are shaping up on a number of fronts and that the world as a whole is rapidly heading towards conditions described by Jesus Christ as those which would usher in His return. It is very possible (even likely) that the United States, the UK or many other nations could be on the receiving end of God’s wrath in some form of judgment this Autumn time – we are repeatedly amazed by the patience of our long-suffering Lord at the brazen rebellion and willful ignorance displayed by nations determined to remove and reject their Creator from their lands. It IS wise to prepare for economic disaster and financial collapse – it has to happen at some point! However, the top priority is to ensure a restored relationship with God through repentance in the name of Jesus Christ. We are living in incredibly turbulent times – are you ready to meet your Creator God? Judgment IS coming and Jesus Christ is the ONLY escape…
